Do I offer Mini Sessions

Dear Kara,

We love your mini sessions! Are you planning to do them this year? If so I can’t wait to sign up.

Sincerely, Past, Present and Future Client.

Dear Client,

I am so happy you love my mini sessions! They take a lot of time and effort to plan, set up, shoot, edit, deliver and enjoy. I love that you appreciate them. I’d love to let you in on a little secret and bit of information on my mini sessions for this year. Feel free to read below. I can’t wait to capture your story this year!

Sincerely, Kara

What is a mini session? This type of photo shoot is a very short, budget friendly shoot where you get a small dose of the photographers session experience.

Before I go in to whether or not I’m offering these I want to talk you through the pros and cons of this type of session. So you can decide if this is the right type of session for you.

Pros of Mini Sessions
-They are short! Great for someone who doesn’t like getting their picture taken.
-You as the client receives a low cost session of images.
-You only get the best photos, so you don’t have to go through a ton of photos and make tough decisions on the few you’ll print.
-You don’t have to decide on a location; it’s already scheduled for you!
-You can use it as a “trial run” with a photographer to see if you like their style and how they work with your family before booking a full session.
-You receive all the digital images that you can use/print
-They are a cost effective way to keep your family photos up-to-date.

Cons of Mini Sessions
-They are short! Not ideal for very shy children who take a long time to warm up to new people. Your time is limited because of the next family/couple scheduled right after you.
-You only receive a limited amount of images from the session whereas you’d receive anywhere between 50-80 from a full-length session. If you’re looking for photos to create an album, or wall collage, a mini session won’t provide you with enough images.
-You won’t get the same “story telling” feel as you would with images from a full-length session.
-You don’t get to select a location that fits your style.
-Mini sessions aren’t as personalized as a full-length session would be.
-You have to be right on time or you lose part of your photo session because of the way these are scheduled.
-It’s hard for the photographer to get to know the real you in only a short amount of time.
-They sell out quickly and you may not get the date/time you’d like!

So you’re wondering…

Does Kara Hanes Photography offer Mini Session?

Talking about finances can always be a difficult conversation to navigate. At this point, my business has grown to a point where I can not offer discounted sessions anymore. I have had to raise my prices over the years to keep up with supply and demand while ensuring each client is getting an experience that is worth every penny.

Although mini sessions make it easier to get all my sessions done in one to two days I’m not a fan of the impersonal connection. Mini sessions are a great way for me to bring in new clients but when past clients continue to do only mini sessions I miss out on catching up with them because the time is so limited. For me I’m all about getting to know them more and investing in our friendship. I’ve invested a lot in making my business the best experience for all clients and at this time I don’t feel that Mini Sessions are the best. This doesn’t mean that I won’t offer them in the future it just means that right now I want to offer more for you.

I would absolutely love the opportunity to work with you and give you the most amazing photos but I understand if your budget doesn’t allow for that. If you need assistance in finding a great photographer please let me know and I’ll give you my personal recommendations!

If you’re interested in knowing more about me, my style and what the pricing looks like I want to encourage you to fill out my contact form and you will immediately receive this info. Sessions book fast for fall so make sure to do it ASAP.

I also love to stay in touch! The best way I like to do this is by having you join me in my private inbox group. Here you’ll be the first to know if anything new is being offered and you can join here and receive some awesome freebies! I can’t wait to meet you friend!

Baby Bijou Designs

Hi everyone! My name is Caitlyn and I’m a West MI mommy creating unique baby clothes and nursery decor for my company, Baby Bijou Designs. I am super excited for the opportunity to guest post here for Kara and share a little bit about what starting my business has been like so far.

IMG_6007 copy

Several months ago I started thinking seriously about opening my own business. I was working part time at Starbucks, and the rest of the time I was hanging out with my super sweet one year old daughter Lillian (and you know, working at home!). I mentioned to Kara my thoughts on opening a shop that featured baby clothing and accessories, as well as nursery decor. Being the supportive and knowledgeable person she is, Kara immediately started asking me about branding, my logo and more. She even offered to help me figure out how to get started with my business – something that was starting to seem like an overwhelming task!collage2

As Kara and I talked more and more, I decided to quit Starbucks so I could have more time to pursue my business. I chose to name my business after my daughter’s nickname: Baby Bijou (you can read all about the story behind that nickname here!) Before long with lots of work, research and also some great advice from Kara, I was ready to launch my business. I was able to work with a really talented photographer and get beautiful pictures of some of the onesies I had designed (can you guess who that photographer is?), and after a few weeks I got my very first sale!

As I’m just starting out, the tasks I have yet to do with growing my business can sometimes seem insurmountable, but by setting goals and making lots (and lots!) of lists, I know I will get to where I want to go. It also helps to have a huge support network. I learned from Kara that family and friends are important to encourage you to achieve your goals, but also the community at large. Because of her, I am beginning to learn how to connect with other people and businesses, and Baby Bijou Designs is starting to feel like a part of me and a passion rather than just some business venture.

I am so excited to learn more and more as I expand my shop and continue to work with Kara and other great entrepreneurs. I’d love for you to join me on my journey with Baby Bijou Designs and read about other fun stuff like craft projects, travel, dinner parties and more on my blog, my Instagram, or my Facebook page. I’d also love to hear about your experiences with starting a business. What parts of starting your business have been the hardest or the most rewarding? Do you have any good advice?

Thank you so much for letting me share about starting my business with you today!

xx Caitlyn

Hudson VandenBerg

One of my most favorite things to photograph are newborn babies. This past week I met 4 day old Hudson. Both Hudson’s mom and I go way back. Her and I are both Grandville Alumni (Go Bulldogs!) and recently worked together for a year. When I found out she was pregnant with their second child I was beyond excited (mostly because they have one other fun, adorable boy already).

Dave and Emile VandenBerg along with their son, Welsey welcomed baby boy , Hudson John VandenBerg on April 10th 2017 at 10:55am weighing 6lbs 4oz. with a length of  19.5in. When Emile told me that her favorite thing Hudson did was make faces I knew exactly why in just minutes. This little guys has some adorable expressions. I’d love for you to take a peek and see more from last week’s session.

Let me tell you how sweet little Harper is. This little girl cried once for me and only for a second. She is such a sweet little peanut and has the most wonderful parents.

Harper Leigh TenBrink was born on February 11th at 3:37am weighing 5 pounds 9 ounces. She came in to the word at the amazing Zeeland hospital. Mom Stacey says, “she is such a blessing from God!!! So easy going” and you can tell just by looking at her.

Book Me A Session!

Bekkering Twins 6 Months

Okay can we just pause a moment in this crazy world of social media and take in these adorable babes? Recently Kyle and Kathryn turned 6 months! Can I just say that raising twins deserves a major award? Juggling feeding and sleep schedules, when one baby cries the other might start and then for a brief moment you get a smile and then… Poop. Yup, those of you who have had little ones know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m just keeping it real.

img_9077

Well despite the struggles there are the best moments where you get a little bit of laughter and my all time favorite thing, a snuggle. When coming in the the studio I was ready to call it a day when Kyle laid his head on my shoulder and we hadn’t even started. (you know I’m kidding) For real though it’s probably one of the biggest things I miss about my kids being so little.

img_8911

Well, as we gawk over their cuteness I just want to congratulate my good friends Curtis and Michelle on making it to 6 months with 3 kids under the age of 3. You two are amazing parents and I just cherish our friendship!

Welcome to my Studio

Hey Guys, I’m so excited to show you my fabulous studio. This has been a dream of mine since I bought my first professional camera. In 2006 my husband and I bought our first home which was around 900 square feet. with a growing business and dream I was unable to fit clients in to the home and I didn’t want to spend money renting a place. I would lugged my studio equipment to homes and back which was a lot of work! Last year (2015) my husband and I were blessed to move to Allendale where I could have my own space!

Welcome, lets have a visit.

Straight ahead and to the right is my changing room. hang your hat and lets take a peak.4y1a2131

to the left when entering, baby can enjoy a comfy spot to be changed instead of trying to do so on the cold floor or risk soiling a backdrop. My goal is to make you feel as much at home as possible.

Behind you is where you’ll find the many blankets, seats and backdrops I have to offer. This is only some as I am always growing my collection. Have a favorite color? no problem!

To your left is the entrance to the studio along with a pocket door that leads to my office. Hope you’ll come visit again soon.4y1a2134
